I cannot believe how devastating this earthquake has been to Christchurch. I am so lucky that I still have a home, after so many friends losing theirs. There is something so emotionally wrecking about losing such a huge amount of my city; I don't think my hometown will ever be the same.

My thoughts go out to everyone dealing with loss.

I'm not sure really how to use this blog, maybe I should talk about my 'feelings', maybe not.

Sony Walkman.

I had to make a vector illustration in class for our photorealistic brief, so I decided to model the first Sony Walkman. It took ages but I think the result came out really well, and from a distance it's hard to tell it's not a photograph, I hope. The poster of the image proves that I should never be in marketing. What do you think?

This is the children's book that I made for Natcoll, I had to use a previously written book so I chose to make the book that Bernard & Manny make in that episode of Black Books. This was a really hard assignment because I've never done any illustration before. I sketch the outlines of the characters and then live traced them in Illustrator, moved them over to InDesign where I filled them in with cropped sections of watercolured paper that I had scanned in aswell.

It took ages.

This is the book, it takes a while to loadClick & press left & right to change pages. (I think).

I'll get him to write a proper description and then tidy this up properly but I really like it in a completely tongue in cheek way. The darkfield lighting shot's of David we took today at Natcoll as part of my course. Cheesiest thing I've ever made.

Die! Die! Die! Tour Poster

A couple of weeks ago Andrew from DDD messaged me on Gmail chat and asked if I was able to make their New Zealand tour poster. Then he told me that it had to be done by 4pm the next day. I got it done in time, even though I watched the first NZL world cup match against Slovakia later that night. The band said they really liked it so hopefully they did, but after bouncing back a few times Flying Nun said that it didn't reflect the album art enough (which as a record label who needs to sell an album, I can totally understand) so they used their version instead. I'm still pretty happy with what I did so I thought I'd put it up on here.

Edit: No actually I'm not sure if i like it. I'm going to make the thumbnail smaller.

Me and my girlfriend Margot watched 'A History of Violence on the weekend and there are some real good places to take screen grabs. The film = 2/10 for an action film but 9/10 for comedy. Watch this if you're as cynical as us and you'll really like it.

How to live the dream pt 1: Hash Browns.

Being poor is hard, I'm not going to lie. But if you are poor because of a number of reasons (No job, studying too much, laziness, addictions) like myself, then it's important to remember that you can still live the dream. This is the first post in a number of thousands that will teach you the essentials of not giving a fuck and living like the king you deserve to live like.

Seeing as T'nealle has fucked off out of the country it seems okay to post about a recipe I've made. This is one of cheapest meals ever and mostly relies on items which you have had around for about forever (because yr flat is so gnarly cold), or basic ingredients that you can steal off yr flatmates.

HASH BROWNS.

What you will need:

Like three potatoes. These are real cheap as from anywhere, you should buy a big sack cause they last for ages. Peel yr potatoes if they have dirt on them (obv).
An onion.
Two eggs. These were in my fridge, I'm not sure who they belong to, but I'm sure I can justify stealing them off any of my flatmates.
A bit of cheese. I know you're thinking cheese is really expensive but you need like 125 grams

How to cook this.

First step is the hardest one; finding or cleaning dry bowls and other shit to cook with. Find the cleanest bowl and grater first.
A lot of recipes for hash browns say you need to make the potato dry after you grate them, but fuck that, that would mean that you either have an endless supply of paper towels, or clean dishcloths. I don't expect you to have either. What you need to do is grate yr three potatoes, and your onion into a bowl. I broke my (flatmates) grater doing this, so be careful or have a decent grater, or don't care. Remember you are learning how to live the dream so not caring about how terrible yr life is, is pretty much essential.
Also grate cheese in to the mixture, with yr now broken grater.
Add the two eggs in to the bowl. When you crack the eggs spill a little on the floor and clean it up with some paper napkins, i think this is important. Mix it in but not too much, you need a bit of egg that's not mixed in to it completely.
Find a frying pan and clean it. Turn the element to 3/4 of the way up and add a fair amount of oil to it. If you need to buy oil you can get olive oil for really cheap from Independent Fisheries. Which is where you should buy most of the food you eat anyway.
When it gets pretty well hot add big spoonfuls (not big spoonful but bigspoon full) of it to the frying pan, make sure it stays pretty deep so push the sides in if they fall away. When it starts to cook a little get a little of the eggs at the bottom of the bowl (I told you about this before) and pour it on top of the hash brown.
Flip them a few times. Like three or something. You can tell when they're done it's not that hard.

Hey look now you have hash browns! Good work mate. It's carbohydrate city living the dream, so make sure you eat these with some Centrum or something. I happened to have some beef flavoured sausages that my mum gave to me, and some mushrooms to have alongside my massive hashbrown. Aren't you jealous?

I made two new posters for Body 125's Christchurch shows. I think they are kind of cool. I found some stock photo catalogs from (I'm guessing) the mid eighties so expect everything I design now on to feature some weird old people/pictures of clowns/business men etc.

Peter Saville

In 1978 Peter Saville met Tony Wilson and was commissioned his first poster for Factory Records. He continued to design for Factory, making both Joy Division covers and nearly all of New Order's catalogue. I want to be Peter Saville. I somewhat believe that music culture dictates nearly everything in youth culture, and that if it wasn't for the influence of his redone modernist artwork then fashion, music and design in the eighties and nineties would have been a fair bit more ugly. Hopefully I can keep doing what I'm doing and help out by making posters and album art and contribute something back to the music scene which provides so much. Is it stupid to think that I could?

Tommy Ill & 47 Diamantes Poster

This is a poster that I've made for the all ages Tommy Ill & 47 Diamantes show in May. It's a lot like HSP posters which makes me nervous. I've started going for really simple and clean designs in what I've been doing as you can see there's only the image and the text, no photo editing at all. I've only and started using nicer serif typefaces, for this I used Caslon Pro. You should come to the show, it's free and gonna be really cool.
